Care and reimbursement in other European countries
Do your family members live in an EU/EEA Member State, Switzerland or the United Kingdom? Then they are also insured for medically necessary care in a number of European countries. For example, if they fall ill on holiday or have an accident.
Good to know
- Your family members are insured in the following countries: EU/EEA Member States, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
- While in those countries, your family members use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provided by the CAK. You need apply for this card for them online.
- Your family members are insured for medically necessary care only, according to the rules of the country where they are at the time.
- This insurance is covered by the healthcare contribution. You will need to pay for any supplementary or travel insurance yourself.
- Claims should be submitted to the CAK. For example, if you have to pay a bill upfront yourself.
Tip
Are your family members insured through the CAK and do they live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cabo Verde, Montenegro, Morocco, North Macedonia, Serbia, Tunisia or Turkey? In that case, they are not insured for medical care in Europe. We recommend that you take out supplementary or travel insurance in this case.
Travelling abroad specifically for medical treatment
This does not fall under medically necessary care. First, consult the health insurer in your country of residence. Then you will know whether the treatment will be reimbursed or if you will have to pay some or all of the costs yourself.
