Why do I have to insure my family through the CAK?
The Netherlands has made agreements on health insurance with a number of countries. Are you insured in the Netherlands and does your family have no or little income of their own? Then the Netherlands is also responsible for the healthcare costs of your family. They are then insured through the CAK.
Good to know
- Health insurance through the CAK is mandatory, except in Turkey.
- You pay a healthcare contribution to the Netherlands for your family members aged 18 and over, not a healthcare premium in their country of residence.
- Your family is insured for basic care as arranged in their country of residence.
- Does your family live in an EU/EEA country, Switzerland or the United Kingdom? Then they are also insured for basic care in the Netherlands and medically necessary care in Europe.
- You pay an additional insurance, personal contribution or deductible yourself.
