Teleworking abroad
Do you have an employer established in the Netherlands, but you live over the border and telework a lot from your country of residence? In that case, there may be consequences for your health insurance and that of your co-insured family members.
What is teleworking?
Teleworking means that you work remotely via a digital connection with your employer. For example, from your own home or another location in your country of residence, such as a café.
The 25% rule
According to European rules on working in multiple countries, you are generally insured in your country of residence if you work at least 25% of your total working time there. On a temporary basis during Covid and the subsequent transition period, teleworking more than 25% of the time from your country of residence had no effect on your insurance. However, the 25% rule has been back in force since 1 July 2023.
Do you work a lot from home?
If you telework 25% or more from your country of residence, this will have consequences for your health insurance. You are required to report this to your Dutch health insurer. This will terminate your health insurance. You will then need to take out health insurance in your country of residence. You can deregister retroactively up to 12 months after you first exceeded the 25% rule.
Co-insured family members
Do you have family members who are co-insured through the CAK (Central Administration Office)? If so, you must report them to their health insurer in your country of residence. The contribution stops, and you will then receive a final bill from us. You can then co-insure your family members through your own new health insurance in your country of residence.
Conditional exception
Do you telework between 25% and 50% of the time from your country of residence? If so, you can request to remain insured in the Netherlands if you meet certain conditions. You can submit this request to the Sociale Verzekeringsbank – SVB (Social Insurance Bank).
The main conditions are that:
- you are an employee;
- you live outside the Netherlands;
- you work exclusively for an employer established in the Netherlands; and
- you telework between 25% and 50% of your working time in your country of residence.
