Care and reimbursment in Europe
Do you live in an EU/EEA Member State, Switzerland or the United Kingdom? Then you are also insured for medically necessary care in a number of European countries. For example, if you fall ill on holiday or have an accident.
Good to know
- You use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provided by the CAK. We will automatically send you this card after you register with the CAK.
- You are insured in the following countries: EU/EEA Member States, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
- You are insured for medically necessary care only, according to the rules of the country where you are at the time.
- You pay a healthcare contribution for this insurance. We will deduct this from your pension(s) or benefit.
- It is your decision as to whether to pay a personal contribution, bear your own risk or take out supplementary or travel insurance.
- Claims can be submitted to the CAK. For example, if you have to pay a bill upfront yourself.
Tip
Are your family members co-insured through the CAK? Then the same rules apply to them.
I want to travel abroad for medical treatment
This does not fall under medically necessary care. First, consult the health insurer in your country of residence. Then you will know whether the treatment will be reimbursed or if you will have to pay some or all of the costs yourself.
Tip
Are you insured through the CAK, but do you not live in the EU/EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom? In that case, you are not insured for medically necessary care in Europe. We recommend that you take out supplementary or travel insurance.
